Here's a breakdown of the 5 must-see temples that should top your Egypt travel itinerary.
1. Karnak Temple
As the largest religious complex in the world, Karnak is an absolute wonder. Spanning over 200 acres, it’s a sprawling maze of towering columns, intricate hieroglyphs, and sacred statues not only showcase the wealth and power of Egypt’s pharaohs but show reverence to the God of War, Amun-Ra.
Don’t miss the Hypostyle Hall, where 134 giant columns create an awe-inspiring visual.

2. Abu Simbel
Carved directly into the mountainside, Abu Simbel is one of the most visually stunning temples in Egypt. Built by Ramses II, it features four colossal statues of the king guarding the entrance. The interior has detailed hieroglyphs and carvings that tell tales of his reign.
While planning your trip, you might have to organize a long bus ride or wake up early or even catch a domestic flight for the long journey, but I guarantee you that the huge seated statues alone are worth the day trip to this southern point of Egypt!
Don’t travel all the way to Egypt & miss seeing these monuments with your own eyes!
How to Visit Abu Simbel:
- Location - southern Egypt near the Sudan border
- Opening time - 6:00am
3. Luxor Temple
Located just down the road from Karnak, Luxor Temple is smaller but no less impressive. The best time to visit is at night when it’s beautifully lit. The temple’s grand entrance and avenue of Sphinxes steal the show!
This site was dedicated to commemorate the pharaohs, and it shows in its design and placement along the Nile.

Bonus: Edfu Temple
I’m throwing in my personal favorite - the Temple of Edfu, also known as the Temple of Horus! As one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, Edfu Temple holds a special charm. Dedicated to the falcon god Horus, the temple is filled with glorious statues guarding the entrance and intricate carvings that depict epic battles.
Strolling through its grand halls, inner sanctuaries, and quiet courtyards, you can feel the energy of its history all around you. Almost like you’ve stepped back in time to witness the divine rituals and ceremonies of ancient Egypt for yourself!

5. Temple of Hatshepsut
Built into the cliffs at Al-Deir Al-Bahari, the Temple of Hatshepsut is an architectural masterpiece. A mortuary temple dedicated to Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh, it stands out for its impressive terraces and massive structure nestled at the foot of the bay of the cliffs.
Not that it looks tiny at all, but in contrast to the cliffs it can seem flat. Don't be fooled! This place is strikingly large and full of grandeur with three stories filled with pillars and obelisks.
The long entrance path can look daunting, but boy was it worth it to see it up close!
