10 Essential Tips for Your First Trip to Egypt

Planning your first trip to Egypt is a great feeling. Setting your eyes on the Pyramids of Giza or sailing the Nile River and seeing the vibrant culture and rich history make it a dream destination for the bold and adventurous traveler.

I've wanted to set my feet on Egyptian sand since I first saw all of the historical landmarks highlighted in The Mummy Returns... literally one of my favorite movies of all time.

Comedy, history, romance + Brendan Fraser all in one, who wouldn't love The Mummy Returns?! I might even go watch it right now!

Here are just a few things to know before you go to Egypt to ensure a smooth, safe, and memorable experience. From packing essentials to navigating local customs, here are 10 essential tips to help you make the most of your Egyptian adventure.

1. Dress Modestly

Egypt is a conservative country, so it’s important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites.

Women should pack light scarves to cover their shoulders or heads when needed. Light, breathable clothing will also help you stay cool in the desert heat.

I preferred to pair layered white or light colored sheer tops with scarfs (in case it got cold at night) with comfortable lightweight pants. For a less casual look, I choose dresses with sleeves or put a shawl over my shoulders and made sure that the dresses were mid-length.

2. Learn a Few Arabic Phrases

Though English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning basic Arabic phrases like “hello” (salaam) and “thank you” (shukran) and “excuse me” (afwan) can go a long way.

Locals definitely appreciate the effort, and it can help you navigate more easily in areas where English isn't as common. Again, this is where a private escort or tour guide would come in perfectly: to help you learn some phrases & help you in case there are communication barriers!

3. Stay Hydrated

Even in the fall and spring Egypt can get incredibly hot, and it is especially hot in the summer months. Always carry bottled water with you to stay hydrated, and consider using electrolytes to replenish minerals lost through sweating.

Most tourist areas have vendors selling cold drinks, but it’s best to buy water in sealed bottles from your hotel or other stores.

4. Get Familiar with Tipping

Tipping, or "baksheesh," is a common practice in Egypt. Just like you would tip in cities like Las Vegas in the States, tipping small amounts is customary and appreciated by hotel staff and taxi drivers. Be sure to have some Egyptian Pounds (EGP) on hand for those moments because it’s easier to know how much you’re giving when it’s in the local currency.

Sometimes you’ll find that locals will help you out with directions and expect a little something for their trouble, and that's customary. Other times you might find folks will chat you up or offer to show you hidden sites, it’s often best to ignore them.

5. Book Your Tours in Advance

For popular attractions like the Pyramids of Giza or Abu Simbel, booking tours in advance ensures you won’t miss out.

Many sites have limited access or timed entry, so planning ahead gives you the best experience. Guided tours can also help you navigate Egypt’s vast history with ease, especially since the perfect itinerary is planned out for you!

Based on my experience in Egypt, I would 100% recommend that you travel through Egypt with a local, private escort or on a guided tour. This is a country that’s best explored with someone who knows the ins and outs of the culture & sites as well as the places for travelers to go and not to go!

6. Carry Cash

Make sure to exchange your currency for Egyptian Pounds upon arrival. ATMs are available in major cities, but fees can add up, so it’s best to withdraw larger amounts to cover your anticipated costs at once.

While credit cards are widely accepted in larger cities, many smaller shops, markets, and rural areas prefer cash, almost require it.

7. Travel During the Cooler Months

Egypt's cooler season, from October to April, is the best time to visit, as temperatures are more bearable.

Summer months can be scorching, especially in the south, with temperatures reaching as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're planning outdoor activities like visiting the Pyramids or sailing on the Nile, the cooler months are ideal.

8. Prepare for Security Checks

Many tourist sites and public areas in Egypt, such as airports, hotels and museums, have security checkpoints.

They are routine to ensure safety, so be prepared for lines, bag checks and body scanners. Arrive early to allow time for these checks, especially at major landmarks.

9. Use Ride-Hailing Apps

In cities like Cairo, ride-hailing apps like Uber are a reliable and affordable way to get around. They eliminate the need to negotiate fares and tips with taxi drivers and provide the convenience of tracking your route. It’s also a safer option, especially for first-time visitors.

10. Respect Local Customs

Egypt is rich in culture, and respecting local customs is key to a smooth trip. Be mindful when visiting religious sites, and always ask before taking photos of locals.

A month before my trip to Egypt, I created a Google Alert that informed me of all the latest news happening in the country so that I knew what was happening locally. Once I was on the ground, I did discover that some of the local unrest wasn't broadcasted abroad and internationally and that sometimes you don't know how serious things are or how tense a situation is until you experience it for yourself, but it is always a good idea to stay abreast on what's happening in the land you'll be exploring.

Generally, showing respect for local customs will not only open doors but also make your trip more meaningful and enjoyable!
